Joss Whedan. Neil Patrick Harris. So good. Watch it.

All acts will stay up until midnight Sunday July 20th. Then they will vanish into the night, like a phantom.

Thanks to ma.tt for the tip!

The Who and Other Good Things

3 comments July 14th, 2008 06:16pm permalink

Pete TownshendI am still having a very hard time with school, but I am tired of whining about it. Decided to take a break from driving myself insane and not getting anything done. It is several hours later and I realize that I am not miserable and exhausted anymore. Doesn’t help my school situation any, but it did wonders for my brain. Suddenly it is filled with happy things.

Saturday night, there was a VH1 Rock Honors show at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion. It will be aired on VH1 on Thursday. VH1 has been having tons of Who stuff on lately. Makes me happy. The Who is one of my favorite bands of all time, and in particular, the one that made my teenagerhood bearable. Lots of performers played at the show including The Who, Pearl Jam, and Tenacious D. I also love the D.

Karate was very fun today. Only did actual karate for half the time, then heard some great stories about martial arts history and got to see a bunch of cool videos of our teacher learning from “the professor” (Professor Chow, I think). I love that kind of stuff. I like Kenpo. It is a lot like Cuong Nhu, but with more emphasis on the Chinese styles than the Japanese. I like my new school because daytime classes are very small and not as structured as night-time ones. I also like the teacher. He is patient and shows me things until I get them, then moves on to the next thing.

Speaking of good stories, I have been taking a break from Shikibee (main World of Warcraft character) and leveling a balance druid named Terunapekere on The Scryers realm. I want to be a moonkin. The Scryers is a role-playing server. I joined a great guild called Claws of Fury. I think I have had more interaction and done more things with this guild than with all of my other WoW guilds combined. It is more comfortable to interact for some reason. Role playing is fun. It is not required and there is plenty of OOC (Out of Character) chat, but it makes the whole game different. I had the level 70 blues with Shikibee and needed a break. I am not a big raider and got totally sick of the daily quests. The game was not fun like it used to be. Until I started playing Teruna.

Yesterday, we had a guild meeting in Thrall’s Chambers in Ogrimmar. Did I mention that Teruna is a hordie? We sat in a circle and the guild master, Grimstad, stood in front. First he made a few promotions, including Teruna. Then he promoted one of the members (Dreamwalker) to a special rank called Lore Keeper (or something like that). Dreamwalker then told us a great story about how thunder lizards got their lightening. He told the story on the /say channel which means any players in the nearby area could hear it. Other people sat down to listen to the story too and I read it out loud so K could hear it too. After that, we went to Gnomeregan and totally wiped, but it was lots of fun anyway.

Latest good thing of the day is that the update to WordPress 2.6-RC1, which I was doing while writing this in TextEdit, went without a hitch. I heart WordPress.

Update: 7/15/08 - update to WordPress 2.6 was just as smooth as RC1 :)

Nice to think about good things for a change. Still no idea what I will do about school.

Learning is Hard

It is almost a year since the last Harry Potter book was released and equally as long that I have been trying to read it. I am about half way through. I know it is a long book, but at this rate, it will take me 2 years to read it. I am okay with that, only I have also not been able to read technical books, which are usually much easier. The timing is very bad because I am taking classes now.

Recap of uncooperative brain cycle: I get too busy, my brain shuts down, I end up not being able to do anything, things get bad, I stop doing so many things, I feel better, I start doing more things. I get too busy. Repeat. Forever.

When I started feeling better after cat scratch fever, things were great. Felt better than I have in longer than I can remember. Meds are working ok, I am not weak and tired, I can work, I can do karate, leave the house, etc. Great time to take classes! Only problem is that I can not read. Crap.

School has been very hard. Some of the assignments are easy because it is stuff I already know (PHP, MySQL, JavaScript) and use every day, but some of it is brand new. In order to learn the new things, I have to do a lot of reading. This is very bad.

I have been able to learn some of the new information by watching screencasts. I LOVE screencasts! Screencasts are videos of someone’s computer screen with audio explaining what they are doing. These are magical for me.

I have never been able to learn things in the traditional ways — lectures and textbooks. Either I have sucked information in without even trying or I learned by trial, error, and/or repetition. Luckily, sucking in information worked until my second year of college. College is when I learned exactly how impossible it is for me to learn in a traditional setting.

Some reasons for the impossibility of learning are:

  1. Can not sit still for the entire length of a class. Will fidget with increasing intensity until I have to leave the room.
  2. Can not concentrate on what is being said. Words turn into gibberish. White noise behind the clamor inside my brain. This makes note taking impossible as well.
  3. Can not read required reading. Can occasionally get enough information from pictures, diagrams, examples, and captions to get by.
  4. Get overwhelmed when too much is going on. Taking more than one class, taking classes and working, being in crowded classrooms, etc.

I do not know what to do now. I am taking two classes and loving them, but I am not sure I will be able to finish them because I can not read and am having a hard time thinking in general. Too many things are going on. I have lots of work to do and we have a steady stream of visitors all summer. My work is not getting done as quickly as it should because of school. Often, I end up trying to do either thing and end up not being able to think well enough to do anything.

At least there is no reading required for karate! That has been just as fun as ever :)

Bay Area WordPress Meetup

Add comment June 25th, 2008 10:15am permalink

There was a meeting of the newly reincarnated Bay Area WordPress Meetup on Sunday at Chaat Cafe in San Francisco. This meetup formerly went by the name of San Francisco WordPress Meetup. Being a resident of Oakland, I prefer the new name, even though the meeting was still in SF.

I really enjoyed the meetup and met some nice folks. First, I would like to thank Jennifer Burke who runs the wonderful Healdsburg Magazine website (powered by WordPress of course!). Jennifer is the person who started both incarnations of the meetup. She has much experience with WordPress, as well as expertise in web content writing, information architecture, and SEO analysis.

The other attendees were newer to WordPress. Every person at the meeting was running and/or working on one or more interesting WordPress sites.

Bill is building a site for his son containing his own stories with illustrations and paintings done by his son. I haven’t had time to read any stories yet, but the art work alone is worth a visit to the site. At the meeting, I worked with him to change some of the graphics in his template.

Chris works at the Metta Center and has just started a blog for wanderers. Being an aimless wanderer myself, I am curious to see how the more focused wanderers of the world go about their wandering.

My favorite WordPress site of the meetup is being created by Gavin. It is called Kitty Single and its purpose is to find good homes for cats and kittens that do not have them.

The goal is to present reasonably high quality videos of cats and kittens for adoption and foster.

The next meetup will be during WordCamp 2008 in San Francisco. Details for wordcamp are not available yet, but we started a twitter account for the meetup so that we will be able to keep each other informed and make a plan.

Future plans for Bay Area WordPress Meetup
Sometime in the fall, there will be a meetup on plug-ins:

  • What plug-ins work for your WordPress site?
  • Which ones do you install — right off the bat?
  • Which ones have you found to help you add functionality to your website?

If you are interested in wordpress and live in the bay area, come join us!
